ASEAN meeting continues in Bangkok, series of bomb blasts in the city

BANGKOK :A series of bombings exploded in the Thai capital Bangkok on Friday as the ministerial level meeting of the South East Asian Organization (ASEAN) continued. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other ASEAN Ministers attended the meeting. Three people were injured in the recent blasts of low capacity, police said. Thailand’s public life is still badly divided by the controversial general election held last March in Thailand, which has been in discussions since the history of political violence. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered immediate investigation of the bomb blasts and take strong legal action against the culprits. Prime Minister’s Spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinavat urged the country’s security system to be tightened and the general public not to be intimidated. Bomb blasts in the Bangkok

Table tennis ball-sized small explosives were detonated simultaneously in different parts of the capital. These blasts are not intended to cause much harm, but rather appear to be a symbolic protest against the government. A security guard was deployed along with bomb disposal equipment around Mahanakorn tower in Bangkok, the capital. According to the local security agency, there were at least three blasts around the tower. The blasts were preceded by US Secretary of State Pompeo’s keynote address. External Affairs Minister Pompeo praised the Thai government for restoring Thailand to a democratic system. The Thai government has called for an inaccurate estimate on the purpose of the bombing. Talking to reporters, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said that it was not known how many people were involved in the operation. The ASEAN summit, which was last hosted by Thailand for the last time in 2009, was also overshadowed by violent protests. At that time, protesters dressed in red party robes had entered the meeting, vandalizing the doors of the summit meeting site demanding free elections. In the incident, the leaders of the member countries were rescued by a helicopter by the Thai Army. Bomb blasts in the Bangkok
